DROID TYPES | BATTLE, ASSASSIN & INTERROGATION

Droids were used most commonly in combat-related roles, where they offered a plethora of advantages over organic units. Droids could carry heavy weaponry and shielding, move rapidly without tiring, analyze targeting and trajectory calculations instantly, and protect crucial systems by burying them deep inside the frame of the droid (often featuring backup processing and multiple layers of redundancy). Droids could follow orders to the letter, taking risks no organic unit ever would yet still maintaining their calm precision. Most importantly, however, these droids were expendable—unlike sentients, the amount of time and energy it cost to assemble a droid was often a tiny fraction that of recruiting (or growing) an organic and training them.

Another prime use of droids was to question prisoners, and if deemed necessary also as instruments of torture. The use of droid interrogators as opposed to Humans made sense in a number of ways: impersonal machines often increased the subject's fear, making him more likely to be cooperative; droids offered a precise medical-based analysis of a subject's system, tolerances, and whether or not he was telling the truth; all of which could be exploited frighteningly effectively by integrated serums and other tools of torture. Additionally, subjects under interrogation by droids often directed their anger and fear towards the mechanized machines; not towards the actual captors. This was often followed up by a later visit from a 'friendly' sentient officer, offering sympathy and establishing a friend-like relationship. Once a rapport had been established, often times the subject would divulge secrets willingly, without requiring direct (and sometimes ineffective) coercion.

BATTLE, PROBE, & SENTRY DROIDS

Devastator Droid

Class: Battle Droid | Cost : Restristed Military Use (50,000 Credits Black Market)

Notes: The Devastator war droid was a class of android designed by Ubrikkian Steamworks as an upgrade to the sentinel droid around the time of the Old Sith Wars. A tough, well-built weapon, the Devastator contained redundant systems that minimized damage and allowed it to continue to fight at 85% combat efficiency even after taking significant damage. Due to its sophistication, the Republic restricted its sale to only military units, making it a rare sight in the galaxy. Nonetheless, most models ended up in possession of mercenaries and criminals.

Sentinel Droid

Class: Battle Droid | Cost : 10,000 (25,000 Credits Black Market)

Notes: The Sentinel droid-series (also known as the war-droid or military droid-series) was the only known series of android among the war machines used by the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire in the Jedi Civil War. Variants included the Mark I, Mark II, Mark III, Mark IV, and Mark V, which were all outwardly identical.

MK I Assault Droid

Class: Battle Droid | Cost : Restristed Military Use (22,000 Credits Black Market)

Notes: While vaguely humanoid, the Mark I assault droids relied on a single leg for movement. They were capable defenders, but had little in the way of advanced tactical programming. It carried one blaster on each arm for a total of two and was not above clubbing people with its arms at close quarters either. They also occasionally had a shield which generated a bubble of energy capable for absorbing blaster bolts and lightsaber strikes for short times.

MK IV Assault Droid

Class: Battle Droid | Cost : Restristed Military Use(22,000 Credits Black Market)

Notes: The Mark IV assault droid was originally created by the Galactic Republic in the days prior to the Mandalorian Wars, but later became one of the most common droids in the Sith Empire. While the Republic used them as automated defenses, patrolling cities or military installations, the Sith Empire used these droids to fill out their military ranks and also as defense forces on starships throughout the fleet and military bases, like those on Taris and Manaan. These droids were used primarily in a defensive manner, and despite their simple programming, proved exceptionally capable of repelling Republic boarding parties attempting to seize Sith starships. During actual assaults, the Sith preferred to rely upon more mobile forces, such as Sith troopers.

Juggernaut War Droid

Class: Battle Droid | Cost : Restristed Military Use(22,000 Credits Black Market)

Notes: The Juggernaut war droid was a battle droid constructed by Duwani Mechanical Products and designed specifically for use by the Republic rocket-jumper corps. The juggernaut operated in a bipedal configuration, and had two alternate methods of propulsion. It could use twin outrigger jets to propel itself into the air for bursts up to one minute, or the jets could convert into intake propellers for underwater use. Unfortunately, the droids propellers would often jam, sinking the droid. The juggernaut was armed with a wide beam sonic stunner and a high powered shatter beam, but its primary weapon was the pulse-wave rifle.

Municipal patrol droid Mark I

Class: Patrol/Sentry Droid | Cost : Restristed Military Use(22,000 Credits Black Market)

Notes: Municipal patrol droid Mark I was a droid designed by Automata Galactica as a law enforcement assistant for urban environments. It was also a popular way to boost firepower without adding personnel among private security companies and wealthy individuals. Even though small, Municipal Patrol Droid Mark I included more firepower than the average patrol droid.

Sentry Droid Mark I

Class: Battle Droid | Cost : 15,000 Credits

Notes: The Sentry droid Mark I was a floating, spherical droid model equipped with a blaster. Others had flamethrowers and icebreakers, and were identical to G0-T0. G0-T0 used many of them as guards on his yacht, the Visionary.

DROID TYPE | ASSASSIN

These droids were used to kill specific targets, often those too well guarded for approach by conventional means. Typically deployed by bounty hunters, assassin droids were often tasked with suicide missions—missions with almost zero probability for successful escape. In addition to their expendability, assassin droids could be programmed with advanced targeting algorithms, allowing them to be more accurate than even the best sentient sniper. Not all assassin droids utilized traditional weaponry, however—certain models, such as the ASN-121, could be outfitted with a number of different weapons or sensors, allowing for different tactics such as brute force attacks or stealthy penetrations. Because of the higher intelligence and independence required for droids of this type, rebellions were known to occur, though not very frequently.

ASSASSIN DROIDS

HK-24 Series Assassin Droid

Class: Assassin Droid | Cost : 25,000 Credits

Notes: HK-24 was a model of HK-series assassin droid, manufactured by Czerka Corporation and based on the schematics of HK-01. Even with their red armor plating and glowing orange eyes, the HK-24 appeared, to the untrained eye, to be nothing more than a slightly sinister-looking servant droid.

HK-50 Series Assassin Droids

Class: Assassin Droid | Cost : 35,000 Credits

Notes: The HK-50 droids series was based on the earlier HK-47 assassin droid. Like their progenitor, these droids possessed incredible linguistic skills and highly sadistic tendencies. The primary function of the HK-50 droids, as they stated it, was to "facilitate communications and terminate hostilities." In accordance with the usual perceptions of HK model assassin droid, the best way to terminate hostilities was to kill everything present. HK-50 units were identical in appearance to HK-47, with the primary exception being that they are "a rather poor shade of durasteel" in color instead of HK-47's rusty red.

HK-51 Series Assassin Droids

Class: Assassin Droid | Cost : 35,000 Credits

Notes: HK-51 assassin droids were advanced versions of HK-50 assassin droids that were manufactured by G0-T0 in the HK Manufacturing Plant. Their appearance was like that of HK-47 and the HK-50's save for their photoreceptors glowing icy blue instead of heated orange and their durasteel was black in color.

DROID TYPE | PROTOCOL, HOSPITALITY & UTILITY

Droids that were used to handle diplomatic affairs, and aid in translation between various languages, were known as protocol droids. Like medical droids, protocol droids utilized massive databanks, being programmed with thousands of different languages and dialects. Protocol droids were equipped with aural sensors, to receive audio information, and processing units, to analyze and apply necessary programming. Because of their close integration with sentients, protocol droids were often given in-depth personality matrices, allowing for a variety of different personalities and behaviors through a process called metaprogramming.

Droids used for interstellar starships, astromech droids, were mobile multi-role droids capable of hyperspace navigation, systems monitoring/control, damage repair, and data storage. These droids had extensive databases of stellar systems and hyperspatial coordinates, which were necessary for faster-than-light travel. Astromech droids were also used in certain starfighter models, typically those with hyperdrives. They served a similar, though expanded, role—supplementing the ship's onboard computer systems and aiding the pilot in navigation, repair, and interfacing. More advanced astromech models could often pilot a small craft by themselves, blurring the line between an astromech droid and a pilot droid. The term "utility droid" was used for many different models that varied widely in form and function. Some of them, particularly the Duwani Mechanicals models, were at times referred as "astromech droids." Some models were used for advanced applied physics functions such as starship repair, astrogation, and even computer slicing and programming. Others performed more menial tasks such as janitorial duties and waste disposal.

Protocol, Hospitality, & Utility Droids

GE3-series protocol droid

Class: Protocol Droid | Cost : 5,000 Credits

Notes: The GE3-series protocol droid was a bipedal protocol droid manufactured by Czerka Corporation. Vaguely resembling later models from Cybot Galactica, GE3s were one of the most common and best-selling droids in the galaxy during both the Jedi Civil War and Dark Wars. They could be programmed for multiple functions, including waiter, bartender, tour guide, receptionist, secretary, errand-runner, diplomatic aide, medical droid, or even swoop pilot. Their programming was specifically designed for social tasks, with an emphasis on human-cyborg relations and a massive database of languages, cultures, and customs of thousands of species.

GG-series hospitality droid Droids

Class: Hospitality Droid | Cost : 7,500 Credits

Notes: GG-series hospitality droids were protocol droids, designed by Adascorp to act as receptionists, hosts, and greeters. Their introduction marked a new level of Human-cyborg relations that the traditional protocol droid of that era could not live up to.

T3-Series Utility Droids

Class: Utility Droid | Cost : 10,000 Credits

Notes: The T3-series utility droid was an Utility droid produced by Duwani Mechanical Products at some point prior to the Great Droid Revolution. They remained popular for years to come and were still the most recent of a long line of physically identical models as of 3,956 BBY. Earlier models in the same series included the 3C, IT, and T1 models. Designed to function as a maintenance droid for a variety of mechanical and electronic systems, the T3 was internally more advanced than its predecessors.

R-8009 Utility Droid

Class: Utility Droid | Cost : 10,000 Credits

Notes: The R-8009 utility droid was a utility droid manufactured by Serv-O-Droid, and used during the Old Republic era for a number of functions such as basic maintenance and cleaning. Unlike other utility droids of that era, the R-8009 had the skills and hardware to directly interface with other droids and computers, which allowed the owner to program the droid to return to a designated computer terminal and receive new instructions without the need for another droid to constantly update the R-8009's programming. Cheap, relatively skilled, and capable of operating quietly, subtly, and unobtrusively around living beings, the R-8009 could be found everywhere from the Deep Core to the Outer Rim.
